Hall Student-Athletes Honored at Annual Sports Awards Breakfast

West Hartford’s Hall High School held its annual Senior Sports Awards ceremony on June 1, 2017, and have announced the following recipients.

Athletic Director Jason Siegal presided over the annual breakfast ceremony which honored senior student-athletes for their accomplishments on and off the field.

“Those being honored today have committed themselves to the sports they love, dedicating countless hours to practice, honing in on the skills necessary to play at the highest levels, in addition to maintaining high academic marks during their four years at Hall High School,” he said.

“It is only right to recognize them for their efforts here this morning while they leave behind their footprint in this great Warrior family.”

Comments about each student were provided by Siegal.

Dale Harper Award:

“A senior who exemplifies the highest standards of sportsmanship both on the field and in the classroom.”

A three-sport athlete and a captain during his senior year, he is a six-time varsity letter recipient, and a four-time CCC All-Academic team member. He will be attending Lasselle College to play baseball – Tyrek Robinson

A two-sport athlete and a two-time captain of the softball team, she is a five-time varsity letter recipient and a five-time CCC All-Academic team member. She will be attending Providence College next year – Caroline Wisialowski

Army ROTC Scholar-Athlete Award:

“A senior who has demonstrated excellence in academics and athletics.”

A three-sport athlete and named captain four times, he is a seven-time varsity letter recipient and a seven-time CCC All-Academic team member. He will be attending Sacred Heart University next year – Michael Verrengia

A four-time varsity letter recipient and named team captain twice. She is a four-time CCC All-Academic team member, a four-time All-Conference and All-State award winner and a two-time All-New England swimmer. She will be a member of the College of William and Mary women’s swim team next year – Tara Tiernan

Distinguished Athlete Award:

“A senior who has demonstrated exemplary citizenship, is a role model for younger students, and exhibits leadership while performing as a varsity athlete.”

A three-sport athlete and was named captain of the swim team during his senior year. He is a seven-time varsity letter recipient and a seven-time CCC All-Academic team member. He will be attending Trinity College next year, unless he gets off the wait list at Emory University – Jonathan Peikes

A two-sport athlete and was named captain her senior year. She is a seven-time varsity letter recipient and a seven-time CCC All-Academic team member. She was a tw-time All-Conference award winner and will attend the University of Connecticut next as a member of the track and field team – Julia Silverman

Carey Award:

“The most outstanding athlete in the senior class.”

A three-sport athlete and was named captain three times. He is a seven-time varsity letter recipient and a member of the CCC All-Academic team seven times as well. He is a five-time All-Conference runner and a member of this year’s indoor track State Championship team. Next year he will attend UConn as a member of the track and field team – Connor Blodgett

A two-sport athlete and was named captain in both sports her senior year. She is a 10-time varsity letter recipient and a nine-time CCC All-Academic team member and named All-Conference her junior year in lacrosse. I’m sure she would have been named All-Conference her senior year as well but missed her season due to a knee injury. She will, however, continue her lacrosse career at Amherst College next year – Cammie Cho

Warrior Award:

“A senior who has shown the most improvement and dedication.”

A two-sport athlete and was named captain her senior year. She is a five-time varsity letter recipient and was an CCC All-Academic team member five times. Next year she will attend Penn State University – Erica Rothenberg

A four-year member of the boys’ basketball team. He is a two-time captain earning three varsity letters. He is a three-time All-Conference player and a three-time CCC All-Academic team member. This past season he was named to the Class LL 2nd All-State team. Next year he will be attending UConn – Daniel Brocke

Carol O’Malley Award:

“A female student-athlete in the senior class who exemplifies leadership and sensitivity.

A two-sport athlete who was named captain her senior year. She has earned eight varsity letters and has been an eight-time member of the CCC All-Academic team –  Simone Smith

Dave Deacon Award:

“A male multi-sport senior who displays outstanding competitiveness and sportsmanship.”

A two-sport athlete participating in swimming and track & field all four years and was named captain in both sports his senior year. He has earned six varsity letters in these two sports, along with being a member of the CCC All-Academic team six times. Additionally, he was a two-time All-Conference swimmer. Next year he will attend the United States Naval Academy – Andrew Swain

Kagan Family Lacrosse Award:

“A senior lacrosse player with 3 years of high school lacrosse, a GPA of 2.5 or better, good sportsmanship, positive role model for other players, and has mentored, coached, or refereed the youth town leagues.”

A two-sport athlete who was named captain in field hockey and lacrosse during her senior season. She has earned a varsity letter eight times and earned CCC All-Academic team honors eight times as well. Next year she is headed to Ithaca College as a member of the women’s lacrosse program – Caroline Grant

A two-sport athlete and was named captain in both sports his senior year. He has earned six varsity letters and was a member of the CCC All-Academic team six times as well. Next year he is headed off to Michigan State University – Evan Duzan

Lance Corporal Lawrence R. Philippon Memorial Award:

“To a female and male senior athlete who show genuine respect for others, demonstrate dedication to their team, and show respect to the flag, for the Pledge of Allegiance, and to those who served our country” To be eligible for this award, candidates had to submit an essay that answers the following questions:

  • What do the words of the Pledge of Allegiance mean to you?
  • What does being an American mean to you?

All submitted essays are read and chosen by Leesa and Ray Philippon (Larry’s parents). In addition to the award, this year’s recipients will receive a scholarship from the Philippon foundation in the amount of $500.

A four-year member of the girl’s lacrosse program. She is a two-time varsity letter winner and a two-time member of the CCC All-Academic team. Next year she will be attending the University of Chicago – Audrey Fromson

A two-sport athlete who was named captain in his senior year. He has earned six varsity letters and is a six-time member of the CCC All-Academic team. Next year he is headed to UConn to manage the hockey team – Jacob Herz

Franklin Robinson Jr. Sportsmanship Award:

“A multi-sport student-athlete who displays a high level of sportsmanship, shows empathy for those less fortunate, is highly committed to their sport(s), has good citizenship and is in good academic standing.”

A four-year member of the girl’s lacrosse program. She is a two-time varsity letter winner and a two-time member of the CCC All-Academic team. Next year she will be attending the University of Chicago Audrey Fromson

A four-year member of the football team, three-year member of the baseball team, and joined indoor track and track & field during senior year. He has earned four varsity letters and is a four-time member of the CCC All-Academic team. Next year he will take his football talents to St. Lawrence University in NY – Burke Martindale

Spirit of Hall Award:

“A senior student-athlete who has demonstrated good sportsmanship, commitment to their team and sport and has a hard work ethic.”

A two-sport athlete competing in cross country and baseball and is a two-time member of the CCC All-Academic team. Next year he will be attending the University of Connecticut – Charlie Lage

A two-sport athlete and named captain of the basketball team her senior year. She has earned five varsity letters along with being awarded CCC All-Academic team honors five times. Next year she will also attend the University of Connecitcut – Marie Cotter
