The free series in West Hartford on probate law and estate planning will provide information on topics that many people don’t consider – until it’s too late.

West Hartford Probate Judge Owen P. Eagan will partner with West Hartford Libraries to host an event series on probate law and estate planning.
Open to the public and completely free-of-charge, the four-part series, called “De-mystifying Probate and Estate Planning,” will feature panels of local legal experts offering guidance related to probate issues such as wills and estates, conservatorships and more.
“If you have ever wondered: what happens to my property in the State of Connecticut after I pass away? Or, what happens if relatives end up disputing the contents of a will? Or, what is the difference between a conservatorship and a power of attorney? Or about any aspect of probate law, then this event is for you,” Eagan said.
Owen P. Eagan serves as Judge of the Probate Court for the Town of West Hartford. A lifelong West Hartford resident, Owen founded the local law firm Eagan, Donahue, Van Dyke & Falsey LLP where he has practiced for 29 years primarily in the areas of probate, estate planning, wills, trusts, conservatorships, real estate and litigation.
The event series, outlined below, will feature attorneys all licensed in the State of Connecticut and with many years of experience in probate and estate planning, all of whom regularly practice in the West Hartford Probate Court.
Each of the four sessions will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Noah Webster Library located at 20 South Main St., West Hartford, CT 06107 and will feature a one-hour presentation from these legal experts followed by an hour for questions from the audience.
“What is the Probate Court?”— Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017
A panel of experts will describe the probate court’s structure, purpose, and responsibilities, and discuss the process of state administration of estates. Featuring:

“Estate Planning: The Basics” — Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017
This session will focus on the basics of estate planning, providing an introduction to the process, a primer on the various types of estate assets, and an examination of different types of ownership as well as estate documents. Featuring:

“Estate Taxation and the Use of Trusts” — Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017
Experts will discuss taxes applicable to estates as well as strategies for alternative estate planning. Featuring:

- Attorney Heather Rhoades
“Conservatorships and Title 19” — Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017
This final session will cover involuntary and voluntary conservatorships, including the duties of the appointed conservator, and the rights of a conserved person. Title 19, or Medicaid planning will also be reviewed. Featuring:
