The public is invited to attend an informational meeting about a major construction project scheduled to commence in the spring of 2017 and intended to improve the capacity, efficiency, and safety of the Park Road and I-84 interchange in West Hartford.

The session is scheduled for Dec. 8, 2015, beginning at 7 p.m., in Room 314 of West Hartford Town Hall.

Landscaping and traffic concerns raised at a meeting held in April 2015 will be addressed, and additional feedback will be welcomed.

According to the Town of West Hartford, the project, plans for which can be viewed in the PDF below or by clicking here, will involve relocation of the existing I-84 off-ramp so that it will be adjacent to the existing on-ramp with the goal of improving traffic flow and alleviating congestion.

An additional left turn lane will be provided on the off-ramp to increase capacity and safety. The ramp will also be re-graded.

According to the Town’s news release, as part of the project the south side of Park Road will be widened to create an additional travel lane and left turn lanes. Plans also call for the incorporation of pedestrian and bicycle enhancement, the release states.

Construction costs, based on the preliminary designs, are estimated at $5.1 million with 80 percent coming from Federal funds. According to the release, the state and the the Town of West Hartford’s share of the project is estimated at $510,000 each. The Town will design and administer the project.

Anyone who is unable to attend the public information meeting but has questions or would like to provide input can contact the West Hartford Engineering Division at 860-561-7540. Those who are deaf or hearing impaired and would like to attend but require an interpreter can make those arrangements by contacting the Engineering Division at least five business days in advance of the meeting.

  • This is a great project. Traffic in WH has become a real issue. It’s great for the town to have so many people living here and visiting, so getting out ahead of traffic woes is very smart. Just wondering if this on-ramp to I-84E will be included. It takes nerves of steel to merge onto 84 eastbound from this on-ramp, on a slight downhill curve, with not much room to maneuver, and into the left-hand lane with traffic coming behind you at 70 mph.
