Many people own dogs, but there are many others who can’t have one yet still crave the unconditional love and playfulness of a pooch. Then there are the dog owners and dog lovers who can’t resist playing with any canine they see. Or those who are ardent supporters of shelter pets.

A group of students at West Hartford’s Hall High School has put together a unique fundraiser that will appeal to all of those listed above – and more.

Callie Demers Schultz, president of Hall’s Animal Aid Coalition Club, described the fundraiser as a “rent a dog” event where people pay $5 to play with a rescue dog for 15 minutes. Additional donations will also be accepted, she said.

“The dogs have all been friendly tested and have passed with adults and children of all ages! Most of the dogs will be available to adopt from the event as well,” Callie said.

The event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, from noon – 3 p.m. at The Good Dog Spot, a doggie daycare in Bloomfield (34 Tunxis Ave.) which has donated use of its facility for the fundraiser.

Proceeds from the event will support The Simon Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to the “preservation and adoption of dogs and cats that would otherwise be abandoned, neglected, abused or euthanized.”

According to its website, The Simon Foundation’s no-kill animal rescue and adoption center in Bloomfield “provides quality care and comfort in a safe environment for homeless cats and dogs until they can be placed into loving, forever homes.”
