West Hartford Gymnasts Excel at Level 10 State Championships

The New England Gymnastics Express Level 10 team, which includes several West Hartford athletes, has qualified for the Region 6 Championships.

The Level 10 team from New England Gymnastics Express (NEGX) took first place on Sunday, March 19, at the USA Gymnastics Connecticut State Championship Meet held at Trinity College, with key contributions from several West Hartford athletes.

The team score of 113.9 bested the next place team, Deary’s, by more than four points. The entire team has qualified for the Region 6 Championships on April 7 in Springfield, MA. Region 6 includes all of the New England states as well as New York.

Gymnasts from throughs from throughout the region train at NEGX which has two facilities, one in Newington and one in Glastonbury. All four West Hartford athletes who competed at the Level 10 state meet train at the Glastonbury location.

Individual results for the West Hartford gymnasts include a silver medal on bars in the U-15 age group for Hannah Barry, with a score of 8.75. Barry earned an all around score of 35.175.

Jessica Johanson of West Hartford earned a bronze medal on vault in the U-15 age group, with a 9.25. She finished in fourth place all around with a score of 35.4.

In the 16-year-old age group, Alana Calabrese of West Hartford scored 35.5 all around, earning fourth place. Her 9.35 floor score earned her a bronze medal.

Hailey DiCicco of West Hartford scored an all around 35.175 in the 17-year-old age group.

The top seven gymnasts in each of eight regions, from 12 age divisions, will go on to compete at the National Championships to be held the first weekend of May.

The U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships is the culmination of the competitive season for Level 10, the highest Junior Olympic skill level that is just below the elite level. Many gymnasts who compete at this level go on to compete at the Division I collegiate level.
