The Saint Timothy Middle School Boys Varsity Basketball team won the CYO State Tournament (Archdiocese of Hartford) this past weekend beating Blessed Sacrament 65 – 32 in the semi-final game on Saturday.

Players returned to the gym at Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury on Sunday and beat St. Mary’s from Waterbury 65 – 30 for the championship. The boys will take their 25-1 record into the first round of the New England Championship to be held at the Shehan Center in Bridgeport at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31st. Should they win they move on to the semi-final game the next day at the Holy Trinity Greek Church in Bridgeport at 6 p.m. and then the championship on Sunday, April 2 at 12:45 p.m. at the Shehan Center.

When asked about their success, 8th grade player Chase Collyer commented “We have worked really hard all year. It was a great team effort and we all did our job. We kept to our game plan and didn’t let them change how we played.”

Eighth-grade team manager, Aidan Deneen added, “Our success is the result of having an incredibly talented starting five and strong substitutes. We are also able to adapt our playing style to outscore our opponents.”

“It has been such an exciting and successful season so far: winners of the MLK St. Paul’s Tournament, Central Ct. Deanery, State Championship – let’s hope their great teamwork and team spirit will enable them to win three more games” commented Mr. Thomas Driscoll, Athletic Director for STMS

“Outstanding turnout from STMS supporters and the boys demonstrated good sportsmanship and togetherness. One team, one spirit, one heartbeat! All signs of true champions,” Marsha and Timothy Bryant wrote after the game.

The team coached by Mr. Baldini and Mr. Bryant brought a 22-1 record into the finals. “Our athletes are being coached by true gentlemen who understand the game, scholarship and display leadership. They have taught our children to play unselfishly, in a coordinated effort that emphasizes teamwork. Coupled with persistence of our children, this is an unbeatable combination! We are so blessed to have Matt Baldini and Tim Bryant coach our children!” Mrs. Bellefleur commented.

Congratulations to the players, coaches and families for a great season thus far! St. Timothy Middle School is a Catholic Middle School serving grades 6, 7 and 8 in the greater Hartford area
