Clare Kindall, a lawyer and litigator who has served as an assistant attorney general since 1998, announced her candidacy for attorney general of the state of Connecticut on Monday.

Kindall, who has led cases against the federal government, sued pharmaceutical and telecom companies, challenged big banks and pursued polluters, said she is running to continue her work protecting the people of Connecticut. Endorsed by two state senators, she also released a list of 52 current and former colleagues from the Attorney General’s Office and state government who support her candidacy.

“Like many others, I’ve spent the past year thinking about the direction our nation has taken and what more I could do,” Kindall said. “I’ve served as an assistant attorney general and it is a job I love. I have the experience and dedication to lead the Office. I am thrilled to have the support of colleagues and friends, and am eager to begin the work of asking for voter support.”

Kindall’s vision for the Attorney General’s Office includes standing up to federal immigration agents and protecting young people who came to this country and are living openly under the provisions of DACA; challenging the FCC vote to gut net neutrality; advocating for students struggling with student loan debt; defending workers’ rights; protecting access to healthcare; empowering consumers to block unwanted telemarketing calls; and, given the federal government’s abandonment in these areas, vigorously enforcing environmental, antitrust and consumer protection laws for the benefit of Connecticut’s residents.

“The Attorney General’s Office plays a vital role in protecting the rights of citizens,” Kindall said. “With my experience working on some of the biggest legal issues facing our state and in public service, I will be a strong advocate for people of Connecticut.”

State Sen. Terry Gerratana, (D-New Britain), said she supports Kindall because of her hands-on experience and her approach to some of the biggest issues facing our state.

“Clare understands what an Attorney General can do and how the office works and she’s led many successful legal battles that benefit Connecticut residents,” Gerratana said. “She has the experience we need in an Attorney General.”

Endorsing Kindall for Attorney General, State Sen. Beth Bye, (D-West Hartford), remarked “I have known Clare since she first entered elected office on the West Hartford School Board.  She has been a thoughtful, hard-working public servant for West Hartford.  With her long record of protecting the environment, consumers, students and the most vulnerable in our society, she will provide proven, effective leadership as Attorney General.”

Kindall attended Wellesley College and the University of Virginia School of Law and has practiced law for 28 years. She has also served on the West Hartford Town Council and the Board of Education. Kindall, who grew up in Waterbury, recently relocated from West Hartford to Bloomfield, where she lives with her husband Mark and their son.
