A 22-year-old West Hartford man struck a utility pole on South Main Street on Sunday morning, breaking it into three pieces and knocking out power to the area, West Hartford Police said.

According to police, Edwin Vincens, 22, of Meadow Lane, was headed south on South Main Street in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he left the road and slammed into the pole near 343 South Main St., right near Rockledge Golf Course.

Vincens was the only occupant of the vehicle and was not injured, police said. The car was totaled.

The crash happened at 8:25 a.m. Police said Vincens’ initial BAC reading was 0.117 and later tested 0.111, above the legal limit of 0.08.

While the utility wires were not brought down as a result of the crash, power was knocked out because a breaker was tripped, police said. South Main Street was closed while the pole was replaced.

Vincens was charged with DWI and failure to drive right and released on a non-surety bond. He is due in court on Aug. 31.
