[Updated, Aug. 7] The Town of West Hartford Engineering Department said that longterm closure of several lanes on Park Road at the I-84 interchange will now begin on Monday, Aug. 13.

West Hartford’s Engineering Department issued a notice on Friday stating that the work has been progressing well on the reconstruction of the Park Road and I-84 interchange, however, as predicted by Town Engineer Duane Martin, the project is about to have a much more serious impact on traffic flow.

The nature of the work has thus far allowed for temporary closure of lanes, with traffic flow in all lanes restored by the end of the work day and on weekends. That will change beginning on Monday, Aug. 13, when several lanes will be closed to traffic at all times and those closures will remain in place for several weeks.

The detours were to have started the week of Aug. 6, but the contractor will need to spend that week “gearing up for the detour,” the town stated in a press release on Tuesday.

One lane of traffic will be able to travel in each direction between Raymond Road and the I-84 interchange, however, detours are being put into place for access to I-84.

Traffic heading eastbound on Park Road will still be able to access I-84 East or I–84 West from Park Road (Exit 43). Traffic that normally accesses I-84 from a westbound direction on Park Road, however, will be detoured. (See PDF below)

Recommended alternatives include South Main Street (Exit 41) for vehicles that need to access I-84 in a westbound direction. I-84 East can be accessed at Exit 42, Trout Brook Drive. Exit 42 does not have access to I-84 West.

Town staff said that motorists should expect delays, and completely avoiding the project area is recommended if possible.

More information about can be found on the project page on the town’s website.
