Renbrook School Announces 2023 Distinguished Alumna

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong presented the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award to recipient Yun G. Lee at West Hartford’s Renbrook School.

Renbrook School is pleased to announce the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award honoree, Yun G. Lee ’83.

On April 22, Lee was honored in a ceremony at Renbrook School as part of its Alumni Night celebration. Attorney General of Connecticut William Tong ’88, who is also a Renbrook alumnus, introduced Lee and presented the award, a brass armillary sphere, which has long been a symbol of the school.

Lee was born in South Korea and moved with her family to the United States when she was 8 years old. Five years later, Lee and her brothers, Hyun Lee ’86 and Woo Lee ’88, came to Renbrook. Lee attended Renbrook from seventh through ninth grade and is a member of the Class of 1983.

After Renbrook, Lee attended Phillips Academy and then Brown University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy. After graduating from college, Lee went to Harvard Law School. As a law student, Lee served as an editor for the Harvard Women’s Law Journal and as a student legal advocate at the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau and at the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Advocacy Clinic.

Following graduation from law school, Lee worked as an attorney at firms in New York, where she represented clients in complex litigation as well as regulatory and internal investigations. After ten years in private practice, Lee joined AIG as Assistant General Counsel for its Litigation Group, and in 2008, she became Associate General Counsel. Nine years later in 2017, she became managing director for AIG Investments. 

Each year since 2014, the Renbrook School Distinguished Alumni Award has recognized the outstanding leadership of one Renbrook alumna/us in fields such as business, health care, law, public service, philanthropy, science, and technology. “As someone who has excelled in her chosen field and has committed her life to helping underserved populations, Yun Lee epitomizes what it means to be a Renbrook graduate,” says Cara Woods, Director of Alumni & Development. “We are so proud of Yun and all that she has accomplished.”

Yun is a loyal and committed volunteer, representing clients pro bono in matters involving immigration, housing, and women’s rights. She has provided legal assistance to refugees seeking reunification with their families, represented low-income tenants who were facing eviction, and served on the Board of Directors of South Brooklyn Legal Services. She currently serves as a volunteer mediator for Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts based in New York and on the Advisory Council of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women. She is also a member of the Andover Development Board and serves on the Equity and Inclusion Committee of the Andover Alumni Council. Last month, Lee spoke to students at Renbrook about her journey.
