State officials described Connecticut as pushing against a tide of new abortion restrictions being enacted across the country during a Wednesday bill-signing ceremony marking the adoption of a series of laws protecting access to reproductive health care.

Gov. Ned Lamont signed four bills during the symbolic event held in the crowded Old Appropriations Room of the state Capitol building. He said the new policies respected women’s right to make choices for themselves and their families.

In a statement, state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest (D-West Hartford), who co-chairs the General Assembly’s Reproductive Rights Caucus, said, “I am so pleased to see Connecticut continue to prioritize reproductive health and rights. The legislation we passed this session, and that Governor Lamont signed into law, will strengthen protections for those seeking abortion care in our state, expand access to birth control and emergency contraception, and improve maternal healthcare in our state. As many states across the country are restricting reproductive healthcare, we continue to improve care.”
