The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is excited to share news of its connection to a Tony Award nominee! Lorna Courtney, eldest daughter of ASD Reading Specialist Melodie Courtney, has been nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for “& Juliet.”
This is Lorna’s first leading role in a musical and her first Tony nomination. The musical “& Juliet” has been nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Choreography, and Courtney’s nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.
To celebrate this achievement, members of ASD staff are organizing a watch party on June 11 from 5 to 11 p.m. at Ocho Café in West Hartford. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door for $25 per person and will include food and soft drinks. There will also be a cash bar and raffle tickets for sale. Proceeds from the raffle will go towards supporting music and dance programs for deaf and hard of hearing students, including those at ASD.
This year’s Tony Awards will be held at the United Palace in New York City on June 11, 2023, where Melodie Courtney will be in attendance with her Tony-nominated daughter. Evan Courtney, Lorna’s father, will be supporting Lorna and ASD at the watch party in West Hartford.
Ocho Café (www.ochocafe.com) is located at 330 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT.
