Darlene Borré of West Hartford was one of several parents of children on the autism spectrum speaking at the Capitol Monday during an Autism Awareness and Acceptance informational forum.

For Darlene Borré, parenting her son Ben brought a different life than she could have ever imagined. Ben was diagnosed with profound autism at a young age, and he didn’t like to be hugged.
“I waited until he was asleep to hug him without causing distress,” Borré said.
Raising a child with autism also meant entering a world where exclusion has become the norm.
