A late rally came up just short for Conard boys hockey Monday night, as Daniel Hand held on for a 4-3 win at Veterans Memorial Ice Skating Rink.

Conard (3-3-0) struck first against Daniel Hand Hockey (1-5-0) when Torin McGoldrick scored just one minute into the game at 14:04 of the first period. McGoldrick’s goal stood as the lone tally of the opening frame, giving Conard a 1-0 lead after one.

The momentum shifted in the second period as penalties proved costly for the Red Wolves. Conard was whistled for a penalty at 12:12, and Daniel Hand capitalized on the power play at 11:25 to tie the game at 1-1. Another Conard penalty at 3:35 led to a second power-play goal for Hand, putting the visitors ahead 2-1.

Daniel Hand extended its lead late in the period despite being short-handed. After the Tigers went to the box with 2:38 remaining in the second, they converted on a breakaway for a short-handed goal at 2:21, sending Hand into the third period with a 3-1 advantage.

Hand added to its lead at 11:17 of the third period to make it 4-1. Conard responded with sustained pressure late, aided by multiple Daniel Hand penalties that resulted in a brief 4-on-3 advantage.

With the goaltender pulled and 2:22 remaining, Conard cut into the deficit. Ken Roche scored at 1:54, assisted by Gavin Mangini, to make it 4-2. The Red Wolves pulled within one in the final seconds when McGoldrick scored his second goal of the night with 14.6 seconds left, assisted by Dylan Smith and Braden Gainey.

McGoldrick finished with two goals for Conard, while Roche added the third. Mangini, Smith and Gainey each recorded an assist. Chase Emery made 26 saves in goal for Conard, stopping 22 of 26 shots.

Conard will travel Wednesday night to face the Farmington Valley Generals at the International Skating Center in Simsbury.
