A group of West Hartford students are hoping to turn an interest in running into funds raised for veterans with a new event that will be held Saturday morning, Nov. 14, 2015, on the track at Conard High School.
Matt Remigino, a sophomore at Conard, is hosting “Miles for Smiles” along with fellow Conard students Michael Fernandez and Keavy Mackenzie from his government class.
“I am and always have been an extremely competitive runner at the national level, so naturally I automatically defaulted to some sort of track meet as a fundraiser,” Remigino said about the inspiration for the event. Some of his classmates were considering holding a 5K, and the group decided to colloborate and host a “night of miles.” However, once they realized that the event had to be held during the day, they changed the name to “Miles for Smiles.”
Remigino and his classmates are hoping that the funds they raise, which will be donated to Veterans Affairs of West Hartford, will indeed result in more smiles.
Miles for Smiles is a series of one-mile races, with each participant running in a heat based on his/her projected mile time. The cost to run is $5 for children and $7 for adults, and all participants need to check in at 8 a.m. Saturday in order to be seeded. There is no pre-registration.
Races will begin at 9 a.m., Remigino said, and will progress from the slowest to the fastest heats. Prizes, which have been generously donated by Fleet Feet Sports, will be given to the top finishers in each race.
There will also be a concession stand at the event, Remigino said.
