Conard Swim and Dive Defeats Hall, Finishes Season Undefeated

West Hartford rivals Conard and Hall met for their annual dual swimming and diving meet at Cornerstone Aquatics Center on Wednesday.

Conard and Hall Girls Swim and Dive teams closed their dual meet season at Cornerstone on Wednesday evening with Conard coming out on top, 96-85.

The win brought Conard its second undefeated season in a row and their fourth CCC West title in the last four seasons (including a tie with Hall in 2022).

The meet opened with the Conard relay of Gracie Lowney, Ella Hall, Rosie Alonzo, and Cecelia Peck besting the Hall combination of Claire Nordquist, Ann-Yee Lim, Claire Culmo ,and Madison Mayr. Conard also took the third place points with Lyla Harhay, Claire Haverly, Ellie Harhay ,and Laura Haverley.

The Conard 200 freestyle combination of Kayla Lowney, Lucy Pincince, and Emilie O’Sullivan proved too much for Hall as the event went 1-2-3 in favor of Conard. Bianca Cocco and Maddie Corthell scored the Hall points in the event.

Conard kept the pressure on with a 1-2-4 finish by Alonzo, L Harhay, and Celia Filotto while Hall’s Hannah Fink and Mayr finished third and fifth.

The 50 freestyle saw Conard win its fourth event as Laura Haverly bested Culmo while C Haverly and Peck grabbed the third and fourth place points with Tenzin Thubten finishing fifth. Heading into the diving competition, Conard held a lead of 46-16.

Hall got in the win column in the diving event as Kate Hynes, Julia Arias, and Sadie Eppinger took 1-2-4 while Conard’s Sanai Belabe and E Harhay finished 3-5 for the Red Wolves.

Hall continued to press in the 100 butterfly as Nordquist and Cocco grabbed the 1-2 spots ahead of Filotto, Alonzo, and Edie Kitzman.

In the next two events, Conard pushed back the Titans in the 100 freestyle as L Harhay, L Haverly, and Peck grabbed 1-2-5 place points ahead of Lim and Culmo.

In the 500 freestyle Conard pulled off its second sweep as G Lowney, K Lowney, and Pincince teamed up to beat Fink and Thubten. Conard’s lead then stood at 80-46.

The 200 free relays iced the meet for Conard as they went 1-3 behind winners L Haverly, C Haverly, K Lowney, and G Lowney. E Harhay, Filotto, Peck and Pincince grabbed third. The Hall combo of Lim, Culmo, Cocco, and Fink finished second. At this time the score stood at 90-50 with only 38 possible points left for Hall.

Hall picked up its third first-place finish of the evening as Nordquist, Mayr, and Corthell went 1-3-5 ahead of O’Sullivan and Lucy Archambault. Ella Hall won the breaststroke with teammates Frewen and C Haverly taking third and fourth. Lim and Sophie Barnes scored the Hall points in the event.

The meet closed with the 400 freestyle where Conard finished 1-2 finish as L Harhay, E Harhay, K Lowney, and G Lowney grabbed the top spot with Filotto, Alonzo, Pincince, and Frewen finishing second. Hall’s Fink, Cocco, Norquist, and Mayr finished third.

The Conard senior class will graduate having gone an impressive 30-1-1 in dual meets during their tenure and grabbing four CCC West titles.

Both teams will move on to the CCC West division meet next week where anyone that has not locked up their state cuts will have a final chance to qualify for the state meet which will be in early November.
