Conard Swimming and Diving Wins CCC West Championship

In the final meet of the season leading up to the state tournament, West Hartford’s Conard High School girls team captured the CCC West swimming and diving championship.

Local teams, Conard and Hall, along with Newington, Southington, and Farmington all got together for the final CCC meet of the season, prior to the state tournament.

Conard capped off its 9-0 season with a win over the other four teams with Farmington placing second, Southington third, Hall fourth, and Newington fifth.

The meet opened with a classic finish as the Farmington team of Jayln Wan, Reagan Thompson, Megan Mandac, and Abigail Esposito out-touched the Conard team of Rosie Alonzo, Ella Hall, Celia Filotto, and Cecelia Peck by just 0.01 seconds.

In the 200 Freestyle, Gracie Lowney (Conard) set a new meet record as Farmington’s Cecilia Minard grabbed second. The 200 Individual Medley went to Kaya Wroblewski (Farmington) with Kayla Lowney (Conard) coming in second.  In the 50 Freestyle there was a rare tie for first as both girls – Laura Haverly (Conard) and Alex Szczepanik (Southington) – clocked in with a time of 26.32,

The diving competion was held at Newington on Monday with Farmington’s Lexi Sardinas taking the top honors, followed by Emily Lagana (Newington) and Sanai Belabe (Conard).

The 100 Butterfly went to Farmington’s Minard, while Hall’s Hannah Fink took second.  The 100 Freestyle saw Julia Michitti (Farmington) get in the win column as she beat Szczepanik to the wall. Conard got back to the top spot in the 500 as they posted a 1-2-4 finish behind K Lowney, Lyla Harhay, and Rosie Alonzo.

The 200 Freestyle relay team from Conard (L Haverly, Claire Haverly, Peck, and L Harhay) bested Hall’s team of Fink, Ann-Yee Lim, Madison Mayr, and Claire Culmo.

In the Backstroke, Gracie Lowney set her second meet record of the day with a time of 58.10 which also lowered the Conard school record she set back in September. Farmington’s Wroblewski finished second. In the Breaststroke, Farmington notched another win as R Thompson out-touched Conard’s Ella Hall.

Conard wrapped up the meet in the 400 freestyle with a win as K Lowney, L Haverly, L Harhay, and G Lowney beat the team from Southington (R Alejandro, Niya Villanueva, Emma Niro, and A Szczepanik).

Qualifiers now head to state championship competition with diving beginning on Nov. 5 and swimming trials beginning later in the week.
