On Thursday, Dec. 18, West Hartford parents, children, and alumni crowded into Conard High School’s auditorium to listen to the high school’s annual winter concert.

The concert began with a both awe-inspiring and unexpected candle performance by the Conard choir, featuring the independent voices of the singers, and the magnifying movements of the candles, this performance successfully commenced the performance of Conard’s concert.

The choir continued to carry through the beginning acts with a beautiful performance featuring multiple solos and a beatboxing performance by a Conard High School student. As he stated afterwards, “I loved this moment, I love music, and this really showcased my abilities.”

The overall performance of Conard’s choir was both immersing and breathtaking for the audience. One Conard parent stated, “This was simply amazing, I look forward to it every year.”

The choir performance ended with a both comedic and theatrical performance of “The Grinch” by Conard’s alto choir.

Then, the concert transitioned from vocal to instrumental with the orchestra taking the stage. All three ensembles featured both contemporary and traditional aspects of music, combining both the slow and original tone of the orchestra with the fast paced and impulsive nature that modern music provides.

Multiple performances featured instrumental solos from Conard students. As a member of the orchestra stated, “I thought that the music really connected with me emotionally.”

The music followed with the band performance, as well as a collaborative musical note by the band and choir.

The music overall brought both the students and audience together in a celebratory and inclusive atmosphere, even at the end – when Conard’s current and graduated choir students came together to sing together in the final song.
