A West Hartford man has been charged with operating under the influence after crashing his car into a home at the corner of Berkshire Road and Miles Standish Drive in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police said that Alex Steiner, 21, of West Hartford, was driving a Subaru Outback north on Berkshire Road at 1:24 a.m. Wednesday when he left the road and struck the east side of a residence at 44 Miles Standish Dr., which is at the corner of Berkshire.

The resident called police after hearing a “loud boom” and discovering that the home had been struck by a vehicle.

Police said they conducted a field sobriety test and found Steiner to have been driving under the influence.

Neither Steiner nor anyone inside the house was injured, police said.

According to police, the exterior of the house sustained structural damage from the crash, and there was damage to an interior wall as well as to furniture and and electronics inside the home.

The lawn was also damaged, but the vehicle somehow avoided most of the bushes and trees, Capt. Jeff Rose said.

The vehicle was damaged on the driver’s side and had to be towed from the scene, police said.

“It’s scary and an unfortunate incident, and thankfully no one was hurt,” Rose said.

Steiner was charged with failure to drive right and operating under the influence.
