Conard High School opened Senior Day with early momentum but was unable to keep pace with Enfield’s explosive offense, falling 43-21 on Friday.

Prior to kickoff, Conard honored 21 seniors – including Taurean Cauley, Hatim Albur, Vincent Descy, Owen Holmes, Joey Fukuyama, Justin Cruz, Michael Soltis, Jameson Lamoureaux, Jackson Hardman, Davih Tavares, Ronan Foley, Dominick Mathura, Jack Fitzgerald, Brady Cersosimo, Caio Ferreira, Oneil Pike, Zach Fenton, Shane Morris, Luke Rubino, Justin Nayanakara and Chance McCoy – along with senior managers Sophia Tran and Julia Peabody.

Conard (3-5 entering the game) gained an early opportunity when it recovered a sky-high kickoff that Enfield misplayed, giving the Red Wolves possession at the Enfield 30-yard line. The drive ended with a fumble, and Enfield (4-4 at kickoff) capitalized moments later.

Backed up by penalties and facing third-and-30, Enfield quarterback Sawyer Lyver connected on a 79-yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Enfield forced a stop on the next possession and extended its lead to 14-0.

Conard answered in the second quarter behind running back Holden Smith, who broke off several long runs on a scoring drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown. A defensive stop set up another Conard touchdown, cutting the deficit to six, but Enfield quickly regained control.

Lyver hit another deep pass – a 56-yard touchdown – as part of a surge that sent Enfield into halftime leading 34-13.

Conard scored on its opening drive of the second half when Shane Morris ran in a touchdown and added the two-point conversion, trimming the score to 34-21. Enfield responded on its first play from scrimmage with a 69-yard touchdown, then added a late field goal to close out the win.

Enfield improved to 5-4 with the victory. Conard fell to 3-6.

Conard will face Hall (also 3-6 after a loss at Platt on Friday night) next in the annual Mayor’s Cup on Saturday, Nov. 22, with both teams competing for the better record in West Hartford.
