West Hartford firefighters responded to a call early morning call Monday morning and although all residents were able to escape without injury, one of the family’s two dogs died at the scene.
West Hartford Fire Department Battalion Chief William Kall said that the family and one of their dogs had escaped safely and were outside the house when firefighters arrived at the scene shortly before 3 a.m.
“Upon arrival we saw a large volume of smoke and the companies made entry, found the fire in the basement, and were able to extinguish it,” Kall said. Four fire companies responded to the blaze, he said.
After firefighters ventilated the house they conducted a complete search and did not find any more people inside but did discover a small dog. They attempted to resuscitate the dog, Kall said, but efforts were unsuccessful. “We put the dog on oxygen and assessed him, but he had passed,” Kall said.
The house, which is located at 1193 North Main St., sustained significant fire damage to the basement. There was heat and smoke damage on the first floor and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house, Kall said. It is currently uninhabitable.
The three children living in the home are all “adult age,” Kall said. The family indicated that they had friends and family in the area, and did not need the assistance of the Red Cross at this time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the West Hartford fire marshal’s office.
