The dream of a state championship came to a close for West Hartford’s team on Wednesday night as Hall/Conard fell 6-1 to Darien in the Connecticut High School Girls Hockey Association State Championship, bringing an end to an otherwise memorable season.

Facing a fast and disciplined opponent on the biggest stage of the year, No. 6 seed Hall/Conard battled from the opening puck drop but struggled to contain an early offensive surge by No. 1 Darien (16-1). The Blue Wave struck three times in the first period, capitalizing on sustained pressure and quick puck movement to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Hall/Conard continued to compete in the second period, generating several quality scoring chances and working to slow the momentum, but Darien maintained its three-goal advantage heading into the final period.

In the third period, Darien extended its lead with three more goals to put the game out of reach. Hall/Conard managed to break through late for its lone goal of the night, but the rally came too late as the Blue Wave – which had lost only one game all season – secured the 6-1 victory and the state championship.

While the final score did not reflect the effort shown throughout the season, the championship appearance marked a significant accomplishment for Hall/Conard. The team fought through a challenging schedule and a competitive playoff bracket – which included defeating New Canaan, the only team that had previously beaten Darien – to earn its place in the title game, demonstrating resilience, depth, and strong team chemistry along the way.

Hall/Conard had lost to Darien twice during the regular season, both games ending with a score of 2-0.

Defensively, Hall/Conard continued to battle on Wednesday until the final whistle, with the goaltender making several key saves during stretches of sustained pressure.

Although the loss was a difficult ending, the season will be remembered for the team’s determination and growth. From the opening games of the winter to the final skate in the state championship, Hall/Conard established itself as one of the top programs in the state.

Reaching the championship stage is an achievement few teams accomplish, and the experience gained will serve as motivation moving forward.
