Quinn O’Neill scored twice and Noah Kabakoff – filling in for injured starting quarterback Tommy Hussey – guided the Titans offense back from a deficit three times in the 35-18 win against the crosstown rival Red Wolves in the annual Mayor’s Cup game.
Both teams came in with 3-6 records, and both were missing their starting signal callers as Conard’s Brady Cersosimo was also out of the starting lineup recovering from a shoulder injury.

Hall won the coin toss and deferred, giving Conard first possession, and they put points on the board in their first drive. Sophomore running back Holden Smith once again carried the load for the Red Wolves. In the opening drive he had a beautiful cutback on a fourth-and-1 and took it to the Hall 18. The Wolves settled for a 35-yard field goal and the 3-0 lead.
Hall responded with a long drive, which featured Kabakoff throwing to Jordan Scher on a third down, for a first down at the Conard 45. Scher was in the right place at the right time three plays later when the Kabakoff pass tipped at the line and floated down field, but the sophomore receiver came back to the ball to secure another first down. The same combination hooked up to end the drive on a 26-yard pass and run for the TD. The PAT failed at with 4:21 to go in the first, and it was 6-3 Hall.

Conard’s offense – which was once again led by freshman QB Xavier Willams – responded on its next possession with a long drive, aided by a Hall facemask penalty. Again, it was Smith carrying the load, catching a second down pass for a first down, later carrying the ball off the left side for a gain that was aided by a facemask call against Hall to put it at the Titans’ 18. On the next play it was Smith blasting it into the end zon,e giving Conard the lead again at 10-6.
It didn’t take the Titans long to get back in front, and Kabakoff hooked up with O’Neill for a huge gain deep in Conard territory. When a facemask penalty was added on the tackle it was first-and-10 at the 18. Conard was flagged for offsides on first down, moving the ball closer to the end zone and O’Neill took a direct snap on the next play and delivered the score 40 seconds into the second quarter to make it 12-10 Hall.

When the visiting Red Wolves got the ball back, the track meet continued on the turf. Williams hooked up with Ian Caldwell who hauled in the pass and then carried a would-be tackler from Hall to the Titans 24. On third down, a quick out to Jameson Lamoureux made it first-and-10 at the 10. Smith then took it up the middle, just breaking the plane with the ball for the score with 9:24 to go in the half. Conard converted the PAT, but when Hall was flagged on the play, Conard coach Matt Cersosimo took the points off the board and went for 2. Smith made his coach look like a genius and he bowled his way in for the conversion and Conard was back in the lead at 18-12.

Unfortunately for Conard, those two points would be the last they would score in the game. “We got off to a fast start and were mistake free,” said Conard coach Matt Cersosimo. “Then we got away from that.”
After a Kabakoff field goal from 32 yards it was just a three-point game. Conard was forced to punt on its next possession, giving the ball back to Hall with 7:27 to play in the first half. The home team then went on a 5-minute and 12-second drive that would put them in front for good.

Spencer Boucher-Zazzaro picked up a first down with a tough run outside. Then it was Scher taking a direct snap on fourth-and-1 for the conversion. Ben Carlson would later take the direct snap and rush to the 6, followed by O’Neill running the direct snap to the 2. After a one-yard loss on first down, it was Boucher-Zazzaro on the sweep to the right that found paydirt and a 22-18 lead.
Following a Conard three-and-out punt, Hall started another drive that featured a spectacular one-hand grab by O’Neill that put the ball at the Conard 24. After two incompletions, Kabakoff was sacked by Jackson Hardman and Joey Fukuyama to set up a fourth-and-long. Kabakoff rolled right and fired the ball downfield toward O’Neill along the sideline. The ball bounced off the receiver and into the arms of defender Michael Soltis who returned it to the Conard 40 with :02 to play. The Wolves ran one play, and that was the end of a wild first half with a score of 22-18 Hall.

The Titans received the second half kick and put together another scoring drive featuring another highlight play from O’Neill. After a pair of quick first downs, Hall found itself facing a third-and-10. Once again Kabakoff rolled out to buy time and found O’Neill along the near sideline. The senior turned and headed up field, hurdling defender Graham Lamoureux’s attempted tackle, and racing in for the 40-yard score just three minutes into the half. Kabakoff’s PAT was good and the Titans had the 29-18 lead.
“I knew the defender was going to go low on me so my only was around it was to go over it,” O’Neill said.
A promising Conard drive ended in another punt, and then Hall was forced to also punt the ball. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Williams bobbled the handoff to Smith, and Hall’s Daniel Carrero fell on the loose ball. Owen Holmes would get the sack for Conard on the next second down, and then an incomplete pass put Hall into punt formation. But Kabakoff –the quarterback – is also the punter, and he faked the kick and scrambled 18 yards but was stopped just short of the first down for the change of possession.

The Red Wolves ran the next drive with direct snaps to Smith and Jameson Lamoureux, and were sitting first-and-10 at the Hall 48. Williams returned and saw his first pass batted back into his own hands which he got back to the line of scrimmage. On second down it was Ben Tam with the sack for Hall, which was followed by an incomplete pass on third down. On fourth down, senior captain JC Nunez stepped in front of the receiver to intercept the Conard pass. A dead ball unsportsmanlike penalty on Conard added 15 more to the play for Hall, which had the ball at its own 42 with just over 5:30 to play. A pair of Boucher-Zazzaro runs moved the ball down to the Conard 28.
Carlson and Boucher-Zazzaro ran the ball out of the wildcat formation to move it to the 15. Carlson took the direct snap on first down and raced through the middle of the line for the TD and after another failed PAT, it was 35-18 Hall with 2:45 to go. With less than one minute to play, the senior QB Cersosimo entered the game for Conard and handed off on the net three plays. The last saw Conard stopped on fourth down and the ball going back to Hall.

Titans coach Steve Markie raced onto the field to try and get the game clock reset to :05 so he could give his senior QB Hussey one last play, but the officials ruled that time had expired and the game was over.
“This was a great way to end the season,” Markie said. “The seniors have worked so hard and they never gave up. I give full credit to the kids.” About the only regret he said he had was not being able to get Hussey in for that final play at the end of the game.

“It felt amazing,” said Kabakoff, a junior, of the win. He only learned last week, when Hussey was injured, that he would be starting the rivalry matchup. “I’m a pretty calm person, but I was pretty excited for this,” he added.
For his coach Steve Markie, it is back-to-back Mayor’s Cup wins in his first two season. “This was a total team effort,” he said. “Some guys had to make adjustments (after the Hussey injury), and they rose up to the occasion.” He was especially happy for Kabakoff who he said was never rattled in his first varsity start, and for O’Neill who he described as “great” on the day.

O’Neill, one of a group of seniors to never lose to Conard football, said this one felt special. “I thought freshman year’s win was my favorite, but I have never felt anything list this.”
Conard’s season’s ended seeing them falling in five of their final six games, several without their starting quarterback Cersosimo. The Red Wolves head coach spoke about the hard work he saw Saturday, especially from the running back Smith. “He’s a great player that has it all and works hard,” said Matt Cersosimo. “And he’s only a sophomore.”
The team had two of its captains – Brady Cersosimo and Justin Cruz – as well as several other players miss parts of the season due to injury. Despite the tough season, the head coach said he believes his players are better for the struggle. “These kids battled hard all year,” he said. “They learned a lot of life lessons and will be better people for what they went through.”

After the game, Mayor Shari Cantor presented the winning team with the Mayor’s Cup, setting off a celebration. Markie said he told his seniors before the game he wanted to pose for a photo with the trophy with all them after the game. In his celebration he and his player all held up five fingers, signifying a fifth straight win in the series.
