Providing a respite from the cold and monotonous winter workout routines, an indoor triathlon challenge produced by University of Saint Joseph and Team Training New England is being held on Sunday, Feb. 15, beginning at 9 a.m. at the University of Saint Joseph O’Connell Center, 1678 Asylum Avenue, West Hartford, CT.
This event is open to everyone, women and men, regardless of age or athletic background.
It is an ideal event for anyone who has been interested in a multi-sport event and wasn’t certain where to start. It is a great test for the upcoming triathlon season for veterans of the sport and a chance for beginners to sample the triathlon experience in a safe and easy setting.
The event involves a 20-minute pool swim, 20-minute guided course on a spin bike, and 20 minutes on an indoor track. Participants may compete as an individual or as a team made of two to three members. Teams of two will require one participant to complete two parts of the triathlon and the second participant to complete one part, while each member on a team of three will complete one event.
This is the 8th time that this event has been held and it is part of the University of Saint Joseph’s programming to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
More information about NGWSD from the Women’s Sports Foundation, which was founded by Billie Jean King to advocate on behalf of girls and women in sports, can be found below.
Lynne Tapper, one of the co-founders of Team Training New England and one of the event’s organizers, said about the event, “Many people spend an hour at the gym a few times a week. I like this event because it’s something different. Swimming, biking and running, all in one hour and you don’t even leave the building.” Plus, she noted, “Indoor triathlons are a great winter workout. Work up a sweat, have fun and stay inside. This isn’t something you need to train for.”
The event will also feature a health and fitness expo with local sports-related businesses including Athleta, ProEx Physical Therapy, Newington Bicycle, and Market Square Wellness that will be offering free post-event sports massages for all event participants.
Fees vary and space is limited. Registration for the Indoor Triathlon is open until the morning of the event (space permitting) but advanced registration is encouraged.

About National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD)
NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman, for her athletic achievements and her promoting equality for women’s sports. Hyman died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has become a day to acknowledge the past accomplishments of female athletes, recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
Since its inception, NGWSD has been celebrated annually in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements of female athletes and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. NGWSD is organized by the members of the National Girls & Women in Sports Day Coalition. Women’s Sports Foundation Founder Billie Jean King and Past Women’s Sports Foundation Presidents Donna de Varona, Nancy Hogshead-Makar, Jessica Mendoza, Aimee Mullins, Dominique Dawes and Angela Hucles are among the champion women athletes that have contributed to the annual NGWSD activities alongside the Coalition organizations.
