The St. Peter Claver Knights of Columbus, Council 10817, have continued their annual donation to “The Town That Cares.” With this year’s donation, the organization has now raised over $25,000 since the Council began holding its annual traditional BBQ dinner fundraiser over 15 years ago – with the exception of COVID pandemic years – to benefit The Town That Cares.

At a presentation at West Hartford Town Hall, Mayor Shari Cantor said, “This is an amazing milestone and the town is extremely thankful of the continuing efforts of St. Peter Claver Knights of Columbus. These donations provide critical assistance to ‘The Town That Cares’ program for food resources as well as financial assistance to community members for heat and electricity during these critical times.”

The annual BBQ dinner is headed by Knights Joseph Whittel and Kevin Walsh, both Pit Masters, in preparing a traditional dinner of pulled pork, chicken, baked beans, and coleslaw. This year’s dinner was enjoyed by over 160 members of St. Peter Claver Parish and members of the local community.

The Knights of Columbus was founded as a fraternal benefit society at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven in 1882. The organization counts more than 1.8 million members worldwide and last year Knights donated more than $167 million and 70 million hours to charitable causes. St. Peter Claver Council 10817 has been chartered since the early 1990’s and supports many charitable and service projects for the church and community in addition to their support of The Town That Cares program.
