During a joint meeting of the Appropriations and Public Health committees Monday morning, lawmakers approved over $14 million to be spent supporting smoking cessation programs in the state. The sum was described as Connecticut’s largest allocation to date for fighting nicotine addiction.
“We have not had this type of investment from the Tobacco and Health Trust Fund in many years in Connecticut,” said Dr. Manisha Juthani, commissioner of the Department of Public Health in public testimony. “What we’ve been doing is using a separate CDC grant that we have to be able to do the interventions that we have, so I think what remains to be seen is now with this renewed state investment in this type of work in our communities, we will be able to see the potential benefits more so and I think that’s what we are really looking forward to and really commend everyone for being able to help get us here at this point.”
