New State Representative from West Hartford Begins Work

Derek Slap of West Hartford was sworn in at the State Capitol on Wednesday.

Derek Slap took the oath of office Wednesday morning at the State Capitol in Hartford. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill administered the oath during ceremonies in the historic chamber of the House of Representatives.
Slap, a Democrat representing the 19th district that includes parts of West Hartford, Avon, and Farmington, is eager to begin his new legislative duties representing his district. His first act was to file a bill to strengthen pay equity laws.
Slap’s priorities include:
- Advocating for a balanced, affordable and sustainable state budget
- Working in a bipartisan manner to grow jobs and strengthen our economy
- Advocating for fair and adequate funding for public schools
- Addressing accountability and transparency at the MDC (Metropolitan District Commission)
- Strengthening laws to address wage discrimination in the workplace and help close the pay equity gap
“I’m grateful for the trust families of the 19th District have placed in me,” said Slap. “And I pledge to work hard and listen to all viewpoints in an effort to move the district and Connecticut forward.”
