Kilwins, purveyors of exceptional chocolates, fudge and ice cream, may have just opened in Blue Back Square, but they have already jumped in to support the West Hartford community by agreeing to be the Title Sponsor of The Old Guard’s – West Hartford YMCA “Swing for the Kids” charity golf tournament.

The 9-hole tournament will be held on May 16 at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain. Lunch, awards, raffles, and auction will follow in the Back Nine Tavern at Stanley.

Old Guard member Ron Robinson, a Kilwins aficionado long before they came to West Hartford, worked closely with Kilwins’ local owners, Kathleen and Joe Allen, on the event sponsorship. The tournament donates 100% of the net proceeds raised to the West Hartford YMCA Camp Scholarship Fund. The fund was created to assist families who are financially challenged and have kids who would love to enjoy and benefit from all that the camps have to offer.

The agreement was reached on St. Patrick’s Day giving Kathleen, who is Irish, an added “incentive” to celebrate the day! Was it luck of the Irish for the Old Guard with this new partnership, or was it a great agreement to help kids in need in our community? Sometimes, even Irish Luck takes a back seat to community partners working together for others not so fortunate.

Why is this so important to Kathleen? Because she is “giving back” to the “Y” to honor her benefiting from a camp scholarship earlier in her life. The Old Guard knows well the importance of “giving back,” having done so in our community since 1966. The Old Guard supports the local efforts of Habitat for Humanity, UConn Health Center, The Salvation Army, Foodshare, Meals on Wheels, and the “Y.”
