New World Trio will perform “A Lifetime” on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, at 2 p.m., St. John’s Episcopal Church, 679 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, CT.
Works by Chausson, Shostakovich, Part, and Gliere with Anhared Stowe, violin, Peter Zay, cello, and David Ballena, piano.
Youth, first love, and the final, inevitable distillation of one’s experiences, are reflected in three separate pieces from Russian composers. In “A Lifetime,” Gliere’s Duos for Violin and Cello makes use of a straightforward musical structure to create beautiful, simple textures.
Originally titled “Poeme,” Shostakovich wrote Trio #1 at the age of 16 while he was simultaneously afflicted with a romantic infatuation and tuberculosis. “Fratres” by Arvo Part has become something of a “cult” piece. Composed in 1977, its musical purity and mystical quality made it a significant early work in a spiritual/ minimalist mode, which developed into a modern classical music style employed by other composers.
The program concludes with an early French masterpiece by Ernest Chausson.
Suggested donation is $25. Reception to meet artists. For info www.newworldtrio.org or call 860-586-8579.
