The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society will hold its signature “Webster’s War of the Words” fundraiser on Thursday, May 8, from 7-10 p.m., at the Pond House Café at Elizabeth Park, with this year’s event inspiring spirited competition between teams.
At least 10 tables with teams of up to eight will compete in a battle of “wits and words” with Peter Sokolowski, Editor in Chief of Merriam-Webster Dictionary, serving as emcee and guiding the teams through what is expected to be a lively challenge with “a series of thought-provoking questions that span realms of language, history, and local lore,” according to the Noah Webster House.

Participants can register as an eight-person team in advance, or register alone or in smaller groups and be assigned to a team. Clever or comical team names are encouraged.
Tickets to attend the event include a menu prepared by the chefs at the Pond House, and will include a variety of passed hors d’oeuvres, pasta dishes, dinner entrees, dessert, coffee, soda, and open beer and wine bar. Tickets are available online here. Discounts are available for groups of eight, and ticket sales end on April 22.
The event also includes an auction, with all proceeds to benefit the mission of the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society, which includes preservation of the 1747 homestead and birthplace of Noah Webster Jr. in West Hartford. Those not attending the trivia competition can still support the museum by registering to bid in our online auction or donate at www.auctria.com/auction/www25. Bidding will open soon and new items will be added regularly.
