West Hartford Police have advised that what was determined to have been a situation involving a suspicious person at Sedgwick Middle School on Thursday afternoon was a “misunderstanding between an administrative assistant and a parent.”

Principal Andrew Clapsaddle issued the following message to parents:

Good Morning, this is Andrew Clapsaddle, principal of Sedgwick MS. I wanted to give an update to the automated phone call from last evening. After reviewing all the information in conjunction with officers from the West Hartford Police Dept., we were able to identify all individuals on campus after yesterday’s dismissal. We also determined all visitors to Sedgwick after dismissal had an appropriate purpose and no students were at risk at any time. As always, your child’s safety is our number one priority and we will continue to work with our community to ensure Sedgwick continues to be a safe and supportive school. Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful weekend.

West Hartford Police will have an increased presence at Sedgwick Middle School on Friday after a suspicious person was reportedly seen on school grounds after dismissal time on Thursday.

Assistant Superintendent Andrew Morrow said that although he was not aware of any student having been approached, the administration is working with police to attempting to identify the individual.

“As always, we want to ensure all of our children are safe,” Morrow said in an email Thursday night. He said that the call “asked parents to please remind their children about strangers and to make sure they use the three R’s – Run, Remember and Report if they are ever approached by a stranger.”

Additional information about the situation at Sedgwick will be provided as it becomes available, Morrow said.
