Public Invited to ‘Breakfast Around the World’

‘Breakfast Around the World’ will be held on March 19 in West Hartford, and this free event will celebrate the town’s multicultural background.

West Hartford boasts a diverse population with residents that come from all over the world. There are over 70 languages represented in West Hartford Public Schools and over 1,900 West Hartford Public School students (nearly 20 percent of all our students) live in homes where English is not their primary language.

This diversity contributes to West Hartford’s vibrant community. Growing Great Schools, West Hartford Great by 8, Hello! West Hartford and West Hartford Public Schools want to celebrate the town’s multicultural background by hosting Breakfast Around the World, a free open house that is open to the public.

The breakfast event will be held on Thursday, March 19, from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at The Fern Street Kitchen at the Universalist Church located at 433 Fern Street, West Hartford.  The event is being funded by a grant provided by Food Share.

Everyone is invited to come by and enjoy some breakfast while learning about local breakfast opportunities. There will also be information on how to bring a breakfast program to neighborhood schools.  Information will be available in multiple languages and translators will be available to offer assistance.

Winners of the International Breakfast Recipe Contest will be announced at the breakfast.  For more information about submitting a recipe visit www.growinggreatschools.org.  Elementary students from Duffy and Morley will perform music from around the world.  There will also be opportunities to win prizes and gift cards.

Growing Great Schools, Inc. inspires communities to create a culture of wellness by connecting food, health and the environment.  The vision of Growing Great Schools is to empower students and their families to become active participants in their nutritional and physical health, while caring for the planet.

Great by 8 is a community collaborative focused on improving access to high quality services in the areas of early childhood education and health.  Great by 8 is a combined Graustein Discovery Community Board and the Town of West Hartford’s School Readiness Council.  Great by 8 has a formal board comprised of parents, teachers, public school administrators, private program directors and other community members to ensure that all West Hartford children are Great by age 8.

Hello! West Hartford, a project of West Hartford’s new Community Connections group, is a town-wide initiative to build bridges between community members.  Put simply, it is saying “Hello” and “Welcome” to each other in one of the many languages spoken by West Hartford residents.

West Hartford Public Schools’ mission is to inspire and prepare all students to realize their potential and enhance our global community.
