It’s hard not to know that Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, is Election Day, but do you know what to do come Tuesday morning?

Do you know where your polling place is in West Hartford?

In 2012, West Hartford consolidated its polling places from 20 down to nine. Here is a list of the current polling places. If you are uncertain where you should vote,  or whether you are registered, you can check via this link from the Secretary of State’s office: www.dir.ct.gov/sots/lookup.aspx.

All polling places are open on Election Day from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.:

District #1 – King Philip Middle School, 100 King Philip Dr.
District #2 – Bristow Middle School, 34 Highland St.
District #3 – West Hartford Town Hall, 50 South Main St.
District #4 – Elmwood Community Center, 1106 New Britain Ave.
District #5 – Wolcott School, 71 Wolcott Rd.
District #6 – Conard High School, 110 Beechwood Rd.
District #7 – Sedgwick Middle School, 128 Sedgwick Rd.
District #8 – Braeburn School, 45 Braeburn Rd.
District #9 – Hall High School, 975 North Main St.

If you are not registered but would still like to vote, there is the option of registering at the poll (make sure you find the correct location based on your address in advance). Check this site for details about the information you will need to provide to register.

If you have moved within West Hartford but have not changed your voting address, you must do so in order to vote legally at the polls. According to the Registrar of Voters office, you should go to the assigned polling place corresponding to your new address, and ask to speak directly with the assistant registrar (AR) on duty. The AR will provide you with a new voter registration card (be sure to have proper identification available), and will work through the registrar’s office to ensure that your name is removed from the voter book at your old address. You will be added to the supplemental list at the correct polling place and legally permitted to vote.

All voters need to provide proper identification. For information about acceptable forms of ID, click here.

If you are voting by Absentee Ballot, your ballot must be received by Election Day. Ballots can be obtained as late as Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, in the Town Clerk’s office at West Hartford Town Hall.

Who is running for office?

We’ve all seen the campaign ads, but here’s the complete list of offices for which West Hartford residents can vote: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Comptroller, U.S. Representative (1st District), State Senate (5th District), State House (18th, 19th, or 20th District), Probate Judge, and Registrar of Voters. Please note that there are three different State House districts in West Hartford, but only one State Senate district, and your polling place will provide you with the correct ballot. Sample ballots for each district are provided below. For an enlargeable PDF version, click here.

What is the question on the ballot?

The question on this year’s ballot is as follows: Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to remove restriction concerning absentee ballots and to permit a person to vote without appearing at a polling place on the day of an election? Additional information on what this question means can be found on this informational brochure from the Connecticut League of Women Voters.
