Candidates endorsed by the Republican Town Committee have released the four pillar platform – ‘A West Hartford that Works for Everyone.’

The slate of West Hartford Republican candidates for Town Council and Board of Education released their campaign platform Sept. 8, calling it their “Four Pillars for West Hartford.” The platform outlines four main areas of focus for the campaign:
- Improve Transportation, Roads and Infrastructure – Help Support Local Businesses
- Enhance Support of West Hartford Schools
- Reduce Crime and Promote Community Safety and Security for Neighborhoods
- Demand Fiscal Responsibility
“Our platform is a strong plan,” said Mary Fay, incumbent Minority Leader on the West Hartford Town Council. “We continue to hear from voters who received the property tax bill on their cars and business owners who wonder why our roads in town are so terrible. We’re confident that funds can be repositioned without increasing taxes for a more robust road repair plan in town than what we’re seeing,” said Fay. “We have many other items to benefit the town and businesses that include keeping zoning local, a more equitable division of resources and tax assessments for businesses in town and a better plan to have West Hartford more prepared for MDC water/sewer issues.”
“Crime has hit a critical tipping point in West Hartford,” said Alberto Cortes, Republican candidate for Town Council. “We need to encourage better development of community policing and support our town police officers better with the appropriate resources to reduce crime.”
“The recent carjacking at Bishop’s Corner really shook voters to the core,” said Mark Zydanowicz, current Republican Board of Education representative and candidate for Town Council. “We have a plan for the town as well as a plan to work with our state legislators to provide changes to our laws that will make our community safer. The voters are well aware that a culture of catch and release doesn’t work.”
“While our schools in West Hartford continue to be a shining jewel, our platform provides for resources to address many improvements in building infrastructure that are needed,” said Dr. Gayle Harris, Republican candidate for the Board of Education. “Our platform will also provide for a tighter focus on curriculum that will prepare our students for the real world, rather than focusing on items that continue to divide us as a nation.”
“Our platform will protect town taxpayers from new debt,” said Fay. “The majority party on the Town Council voted on $300 million Pension Obligation Bonds earlier this year. This was a bad deal for the town that didn’t resolve the town’s pension issues at all. In fact, it put our town in a worse predicament by moving our pension liability from a moral to a direct obligation for the town. Fortunately, we have a plan that will help better solve for the town’s pension liability issue.”
“In our town, we don’t need affordable housing, we need to make housing more affordable,” said Zydanowicz. “Our platform is designed to do just that.”
