The Seniors Job Bank has selected executives to guide it through its 39th year. Directing the nonprofit, volunteer-driven community organization that connects local people over 50 with businesses and households seeking workers, will be Dennis Carrithers, president, Bernie Weiss, vice president, and Anne Danaher, secretary, all of West Hartford, as well as Del Shilkret, treasurer, of Granby, and Dale Wolfe, assistant treasurer, of Bloomfield.

The officers are advised by a 16 member Board; day-to-day management responsibilities continue to lie with executive director Sheila Diamond, of Avon.

From its West Hartford headquarters, the Seniors Job Bank (SJB) serves seven central Connecticut towns. Businesses, non-profits, public agencies, and households call upon SJB to fill openings in a wide variety of job categories.

SJB maintains a database of approximately 500 service providers – men and women over age 50, representing more than 300 occupational and professional skills, blue and white collar. All the service providers pass a background check before being registered.

While the service providers are at least 50, the clients for whom they work can be of any age.

“To our clients, the householders, companies, professional practices, and public agencies whose staffing problems we help solve, SJB is a source of trained, experienced workers. To our service providers, the folks who take the jobs we attract, SJB is a way to earn income and stay productive. But from a broader perspective, SJB is an economic development engine for the entire mid-state region,” said Carrithers.

Diamond explained that when a firm or homeowner with work to be done calls, SJB identifies service providers qualified to handle the task and presents several for the client to consider. The client and service provider negotiate the terms of the project, including compensation. “Of key importance,” Diamond added, “there’s no charge to either party for the referral.”

Some domestic clients are looking for assistance with one-time chores or home maintenance fixes. Others want scheduled, continuing house and grounds programs. With commercial clients, too, jobs can be one-off or long term assignments. They may involve office tasks, transportation, retail, industrial, and any number of other types of activities.
