West Hartford Police sent out an advisory via social media just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday indicating that Park road between Jessamine Street and South Quaker Lane was closed to traffic due to the investigation of a motor vehicle collision, and more than nine hours later, the road remained closed in both directions.

While police have not yet released any details about the incident, witnesses at the scene stated that an SUV with a single occupant had crashed into a utility pole and rolled over.

Witnesses said that crews from the West Hartford Fire Department who responded to the scene had to extricate the driver from the vehicle. While the vehicle sustained extensive damage and air bags were deployed, a witness said that the driver appeared conscious once removed from the vehicle for transport to a local hospital.

A second vehicle was damaged in connection with the incident, when the utility pole that was damaged fell on the vehicle. The second vehicle, which was occupied by one person and a dog, was drivable and the operator did not appear to sustain any injuries.

Power was knocked out to customers in the area for several hours, but was restored to most before 3 p.m. An Eversource representative at the scene told We-Ha.com that a generator was being brought in to temporarily provide power to one of the apartment buildings in the area until the utility pole that had been destroyed by the crash could be replaced.

The loss of power resulted in the cancellation of the final show of “Toni Stone” at Playhouse on Park.
