St. James’s Episcopal Church, located on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford, will be taking part in the town’s Dec. 2 Holiday stroll by holding an ‘Outdoor Nativity Walk.’

St. James’s Episcopal Church traditionally involves the children of the congregation in a Christmas Eve pageant, and while a virtual pageant served as a substitute in 2020, this year an event has been planned as part of the West Hartford Holiday Stroll on Dec. 2, and it’s something that can be experienced by anyone in the community.

“Trying to pull off a Christmas pageant at St. James’s this year is a challenge. With children just beginning to receive the vaccine, it didn’t feel like the right time to gather in the multiple hundreds indoors on Christmas Eve,” said Director of Family Ministries, Priscilla Hooper.

“Bob (the rector of St. James’s) and I talked to a public health expert and decided that this year, an outside Nativity Walk was the way to go,” she added.

This year, as a part of the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce Holiday Stroll, St. James’s will offer a four-scene nativity walk, telling the original Christmas story. The story begins with the Old-Testament reading Isaiah and conclude with the Luke version of the birth of Jesus.

The walk will be done in small groups with each group having their own tour guide who will tell the story.

“Come and experience the birth of Jesus and see all your friends as well,” said Hooper.

The Holiday Stroll will take place on Thursday, Dec. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Nativity Walk will take place from 5:30 to 6 p.m. that evening. St. James’s Episcopal Church is at 1018 Farmington Avenue, just past the intersection of Walden Street and Farmington Avenue.

If you have any questions about the Nativity Walk, please feel free to contact Priscilla Hooper, Director of Family Ministries, at [email protected].
