I-84 eastbound between Exit 44 and Exit 46 in West Hartford was closed for more than six hours on Tuesday for an investigation of an incident that resulted in a pedestrian being struck and killed by a truck involved in a road rage incident.

Connecticut State Police said that troopers from Troop H responded at approximately 3:16 p.m. Tuesday to what was initially reported as a “car vs. pedestrian” on I-84 east near Exit 46 that involved serious injuries.

In a news release issued Wednesday morning, State. Police said their preliminary investigation revealed the two vehicles involved were a 2023 Freightliner tractor towing a 2007 Great Dane trailer that was traveling in the right lane, and a 2024 Freightliner box truck that was traveling in the center lane of the highway.

Traffic in the area was congested, State Police said, when “one of the operators exited their vehicle, ran across the highway, climbed onto the box truck, and a disturbance ensued.”

Police said one of the “involved individuals was run over by one of the involved vehicles” in the midst of the disturbance. None of the individuals involved have been identified.

According to state police, the 2023 Freightliner tractor had Indiana registration 3774810 while the Great Dane trailer also had Indiana plates, registration 302771ST. The box truck had a Connecticut registration, BX44255.

The highway opened late Tuesday evening following investigation by the State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Squad (CARS), and the incident remains under further investigation.

State Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed this fatal incident – or who may have cellphone and/or dashcam footage of the incident – to please contact CSP Detective Timothy Nohelty at 860-706-5632 or [email protected].
