A perceived threat at Hall High School appears to have been an unfounded rumor perpetuated by a “bad game of ‘telephone,” Principal Dan Zittoun said in a letter emailed to parents and staff Monday night.

West Hartford Police Lt. Ted Stoneburner said that information was received Monday about the “threat of a school shooting,” possibly at Hall.

“We investigated all leads last night and found this was only an unfounded rumor that was perpetuating itself. We take any and all rumors or threats very seriously and will investigate all of them,” Stoneburner said in an email Tuesday morning.

In his letter, Zittoun said that there had been a “rumor going around that there was a Hall student who made a threat toward students at the school.” However, after investigation it appeared that there were no threats by a Hall student toward any other students, he said.

“We believe this is a bad game of ‘telephone’ combining unrelated incidents earlier in the week that did not involve threats to Hall students,” Zittoun wrote in his letter.

“Something happened last week and was an unfounded rumor, “Assistant Superintendent Andrew Morrow said Tuesday. He said it was of no concern and that police have been involved in the situation from the beginning.

Morrow said that the administration meets with the the West Hartford Police Department on a regular basis and “are always reviewing and training on school security measures.”

Zittoun said he is thankful that students came forward and shared information which is essential in ensuring school safety.

Stoneburner said that police would have “an extra police presence at the school due to the volatility of this type of incident, however, no issues at the school are anticipated on Tuesday.
