Three West Hartford Students Find Success at State National History Day Competition

A student from West Hartford’s Bristow Middle School will be continuing on to national competition.

Two West Hartford public school students placed first at the Connecticut State National History Day competition in May. In addition, one West Hartford public school student won a special prize at the Connecticut State competition.
Eleanor Farquhar (Bristow Middle School) won first place in the Junior Division Individual Performance category for her entry entitled “Estelle Griswold: Debating the Past for the Future of Women’s Healthcare Rights.” Eleanor will be advancing to the national contest which takes place next June 18.
Claire Flynn (Conard High School) won third place in the Senior Division Individual Documentary category for her entry entitled: “Ending The Troubles with Diplomatic Debate: How the Mitchell Principles paved the way towards lasting peace in Northern Ireland.”
Daphne Brewer (Conard High School) won a Special Prize for an Outstanding Entry Related to Civics, Government, or Citizenship, presented by the Connecticut Democracy Center, for her Senior Division entry entitled “Monkey to Man: How the Scopes Trial Sparked Widespread Debate and Influenced the American Classroom.”
Students begin the History Day competition by presenting their projects in classrooms, schools, and districts. Top entries are invited to the state level contest. The top two entries in each category at the state level are then invited to the National Contest.
