West Hartford Police, along with several state agencies, conducted compliance checks on two local smoke shops on Friday, and announced that the shops have been issued stop work orders and will be closed until further notice.

According to a news release issued Friday afternoon by West Hartford Police, members of the department’s Community Support Unit (CSU) conducted the compliance checks on the two shops in collaboration with representatives of the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), Department of Mental Health and Addictive Services (DMHAS), Department of Revenue Services (DRS), and the CT Department of Labor Wage and Workplace Standards.

Both the NY Convenience Shop at 74 LaSalle Road and the Bluemoon Smoke Shop at 39 South Main Street were found to be out of compliance and received the stop work orders.

According to Capt. Aaron Vafiades, NY Convenience Shop was found to have issues “with required documents and licenses with the state of CT. Cigarette products were seized due to illegal tax stamps.”

The Bluemoon Smoke Shop’s licenses with the state had expired, Vafiades said.

“The West Hartford Police Department would like to thank the aforementioned agencies for ensuring the proper compliance with local and state regulations,” Vafiades said in an email.
