A group of very excited adult ESL (English as a Second Language) students toured the Connecticut State Capitol and Legislative Office Building (LOB) on Monday, March 17, 2025. The group attends the advanced classes in West Hartford’s Adult Education Program.

Students on the tour come from Afghanistan, China, Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, Peru, and the Ukraine. All are very engaged in current political events. Before the tour, they read articles about world and local events, including economic news and the price of eggs.

During many lively conversations about political events, they compared United States perspectives to those of their native country.

Joe Viola, their teacher, pointed out, Of course we read and discussed immigration enforcement policies and deportations in this current administration and how it affects each student. Some expressed agreement with strict enforcement and others were silent.”

Students in West Hartford’s Adult ESL Program come from 40 countries worldwide, live in West Hartford and attend classes in the program to learn English.
