No injuries were reported and damage from a Saturday night blaze that West Hartford firefighters were able to quickly extinguish was largely contained to the rear of a single family home at 119 Keeney Avenue.

According to Deputy Chief Russell Duffy, the fire was reported at approximately 10:39 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3.

When crews from Car 4 arrived, Duffy said smoke and fire were visible at the rear of the structure.

Firefighters were able to stretch two 1¾ lines to quickly extinguish the blaze. There was some damage to the rear of the building, but it was mostly contained with some minor extension into the home, Duffy said.

The occupants of the home had self-evacuated before crews arrived, officials said, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office, but according to officials does not appear to be suspicious.

Information was not immediately available about whether or not the home, built in 1930 according to town records, is currently habitable.

The West Hartford Fire Department issued a reminder to residents “to ensure that working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are installed on every level of their home. Additionally, when using candles, grills, or fire pits, residents are urged to use caution and ensure all flames are completely extinguished after use.”

The West Hartford Fire Department also expressed appreciation for mutual aid coverage provided by the UConn Fire Department, New Britain Fire Department, and Newington Fire Department while crews were engaged at the scene, as well as to American Medical Response, the Emergency Operations Center, West Hartford Police, West Hartford Public Works, and Eversource for their assistance.
