Watkinson seventh grader Maeve Healy, 12, of West Hartford, is one of 36 girls chosen from the United States and Canada to star in Discovery Girls Magazine, a leadership magazine popular among young girls ages 8-12.
Healy will be featured in one of the 2016 issues and will be flown out to California for a four-day trip to attend Discovery Girls’ national summit.
“Each girl fills out a questionnaire about themselves and (Discovery) reads over all of them and chooses these 36 girls to go to California,” Healy explained, “They get to come up with ideas and create the magazine.”
Up to six girls are featured in each issue of the magazine, each getting to model and have their own two-page spread. Healy said she got the news from her mom when being picked up from sleep-away camp.
“When we got home I told my grandmother, ‘I got into Discovery Girls!’ and started jumping up and down, bouncing on my suitcase,” Healy laughed, “It was very exciting.”
According to Healy, the questionnaire took her four months to fill out. It is comprised of a variety of questions, ranging from what superpower she would choose to describing the hardest struggle she has ever experienced.
“The first question asks what you are passionate about,” Healy said, “I’m really passionate about writing so I told them how I’ve written a novel, a play, and how I want to become a marine biologist.”
Healy will be headed to California with her mother in February 2016.
