It’s been a very exciting week for many of West Hartford’s teams.
One week after a heartbreaking one-point loss to Glastonbury, Conard football rallied and beat East Hartford 23-20 on Friday, Sept. 25. The game was not lacking any drama, with Conard up 17-0 in the second quarter and holding a 17-7 lead going into halftime. A quick touchdown by East Hartford at the start of the second half made the score too close for comfort. Conard sophomore Finn Cahill kicked his second field goal of the night with just over 10 minutes left in the game, but five minutes later the Hornets scored another touchdown. East Hartford missed the extra point, sending the game into overtime, and Cahill’s field goal in the second overtime possession gave the Chieftains the win. For more details, read the complete story by Nick Greene in the Hartford Courant.
Cahill has been nominated by WFSB Sports as a Candidate for Athlete of the Week after his amazing game-saving play Friday night. Help promote Conard and West Hartford by casting your vote for Cahill by clicking here: http://www.wfsb.com/category/
Hall football traveled to Hartford on Saturday where they defeated Hartford Public 34-20. Hall kicker Erin Bellucci, whose father Harry Bellucci is Hartford Public’s head coach, kicked four extra points in the Warriors’ victory.
The Conard boys are playing some great soccer! On Wednesday, Sept. 30, the Chieftains defeated a skilled and aggressive Avon team 3-2. The teams went into the half tied 0-0, and Conard’s Brendan D’Arcy broke the tie when a long direct kick sailed past the Avon goalie halfway through the second half. Avon answered with two goals, pulling ahead of the Chieftains 2-1 with just six minutes left to play. A minute later, Conard’s Jordan Scrimgeour kicked one in for the tie. It appeared the game would head into overtime when, with 5.2 seconds left on the clock, Conard sophomore Aidan O’Brien got one past Avon goalie. Conard also had a win Monday at Bulkeley.
The Hall boys soccer team is 5-1-1 after Wednesday evening’s match against Farmington ended in a scoreless tie. The Warriors’ only loss so far this season was to top-ranked Glastonbury. Hall will host unbeaten Southington on Friday before traveling across town to meet the Chieftains on Monday.
The Conard girls cross country team topped both Bristol Central and Manchester in its first home cross country meet of the season on Tuesday. Conard girls swept the top four spots in the race, with Gwen Geisler leading the pack and Lindsay Chen, Emma Oriol, and Nora Dynowski close behind.
