The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is hosting several fishing related events at sites around the state, including at McGovern Pond at Spicebush Swamp on Mountain Road.
The Town of West Hartford is partnering with DEEP for the “Fish with CARE” program, and has announced the opening of registration for the popular event, designed for beginning anglers or those looking to refresh their skills.
“Cast your line at beautiful McGovern Pond on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. We’ll provide loaner tackle, bait, and expert instruction from our staff and certified volunteer fishing coaches,” the town said in an announcement. Fish with CARE is open to anyone ages 16 and older, as well as to those between ages 6 and 15 if accompanied by an adult. Individuals ages 16 and up need an Connecticut fishing license.
Space is limited, and registration is required. Click here to register or for more details.
The “catch and keep” trout fishing season officially opens in Connecticut on the second Saturday in April at 6 a.m. – fishing prior to that date is catch-and-release only – and DEEP invites residents to participate in the celebration, and observe the public trout stocking events taking place on Saturday, April 11.

More than 500,000 trout will be released into bodies of water throughout the state – lakes, bonds, rivers, and streams – including at McGovern Pond in West Hartford at 8 a.m. on April 11.
“Connecticut’s investment in our trout hatcheries produces hundreds of thousands of spectacular fish each year, helping position fishing and boating at the top of our outdoor recreation economy,” said DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes in a statement. “Thanks to our dedicated hatchery staff, we’re able to provide exceptional fishing experiences statewide for anglers of all skill levels.”
At the Spring Fishing Day celebration, attendees at the highly popular events get an opportunity to interact with DEEP staff, learn about DEEP’s trout program, and enjoy a hands-on experience releasing trout raised at our state’s hatcheries into their new homes.
See DEEP’s Online Fishing Guide for complete details. Anglers can find more information on trout stocking online using DEEP’s Interactive Trout Stocking Map.
