A Newington tax clerk was due in court Thursday on charges of forgery, larceny, and criminal impersonation after using forged coupons in a West Hartford Stop & Shop, police said.
Rosemarie Taber, 52, of Rockledge Drive in Newington, was charged Dec. 27, 2016.
Police said that they were contacted by Stop & Shop after discovering that a customer had used forged coupons to purchase goods at a high discount. Forged coupons had been used on several occasions, including earlier in the day that the incident was reported, and Stop & Shop employees recognized Taber.
A loyalty card was being used for the transaction, but police said that it was Taber, not the owner of the card, who was making the purchases.
Police are continuing to investigate and believe that the scheme had been taking place for an extended period of time. They did not release the estimated dollar amount of the suspected fraud.
Taber is listed on the Town of Newington’s website as being employed as a revenue clerk. She was hired in November 2008 according to documents found on the website. The Newington Town Manager was not available Thursday afternoon to provide a statement regarding Taber’s current employment status.
Taber was charged with sixth-degree larceny, second-degree forger, and criminal impersonation. SHe was released on $1,500 non-surety bond and due in court Thursday.
