Irwin ‘Red’ Corning retired after working 66 years – 20 of them as a crossing guard.
Submitted by Capt. Jeff Rose, West Hartford Police Department.
On June 22, 2015, Crossing Guard Irwin “Red” Corning was honored for his retirement after 20 years of service to the Town of West Hartford. Red was assigned to the intersection of Boulevard at Wardwell Road. He crossed kids attending Duffy School and Sedgwick Middle School.
Red is now retired after working an astounding 66 years! He began his service as a crossing guard after working 46 years at Wiremold in West Hartford. Just a couple days after being honored, Red turned 86 years old. He lives in West Hartford with his wife Betty.
Red did not consider his job as a crossing guard to be work. Standing at about 6’ 4”, Red was a formidable presence at his post. He was admired and respected by all children and parents whom he crossed for 20 years.
The job of a crossing guard is a challenging and worthwhile occupation. The service they provide helps to ensure our school children walk to school safely while crossing our busy roads. From a beautiful sunny day to a day with snow and freezing rain, crossing guards are always at their posts.
By honoring Red Corning we honor all crossing guards for their service.
