West Hartford Police Department is proud to announce that applications are being accepted for the Behind the Badge Citizen’s Academy.

The academy begins Wednesday, Sept. 28 and ends Wednesday, Nov. 16. Classes meet once a week from 6 to 9 p.m. for eight consecutive Wednesday nights at the police department’s headquarters at 103 Raymond Rd. There is no cost.

The program is specially designed to introduce the community to the reality of a career in law enforcement. The eight-week semester will cover a variety of topics presented by the sworn and civilian members of the West Hartford Police Department. The purpose of each class topic is to introduce residents to the procedures, practices, problems, concerns, and challenges that law enforcement officers face in the performance of their duties. Our goal is to allow our residents to become more informed of what our department has to offer.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

• Communications/911
• Recruitment & Training
• Field Training Officer Program
• ESU/Emergency Response
• Patrol Procedures
• Crime Scene Investigation
• Polygraph
• Use of Force
• Defensive Tactics
• K-9 Unit
• Terrorism
• Home Security/Fraud
• Firearms Automated Training System
• DUI
• Sexual Offenders
• 4-hour patrol ride-along
