Eileen Eustis, who was an assistant principal at Conard High School before leaving the district in 2018 to become principal at Berlin High School, will be returning to West Hartford Public Schools this summer as director of Secondary Education.
Executive Director of Human Resources Julio Duarte announced the appointment of Eustis to fill the role being vacated by Anne McKernan, who in May was officially named assistant superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for West Hartford Public Schools after Paul Vicinus – who previously held the position – was named the district’s superintendent. For the past year, McKernan had been temporarily serving as assistant superintendent for Administration, while Andy Morrow filled in as superintendent on an interim basis.
Eustis was an assistant principal at Conard from 2016 through 2018, and prior to that was an assistant principal at Simsbury High School for nine years. She was previously English-Language Arts department supervisor at Henry James Memorial School in Simsbury, and began her career teaching language arts at the middle school level.
Eustis has a bachelor’s in elementary education from Saint Mary’s College, a master’s in instructional leadership from Loyola University (Chicago), and a 6th Year Certificate from UConn.
“Eileen has a wealth of experience, a keen insight into educational practice, and a strong sense of mission in relating her work to educational improvement,” Duarte wrote in an announcement of the appointment. “Please join me in welcoming Eileen back to West Hartford.”
Mathematics Department Supervisor Michelle Graveline had been serving as interim director of Secondary Education since July 1, 2023.
